Sake Cup 12 Months CollectionFebruary, Spring Shower

The cold weather continues in February, yet under the Japanese lunar calendar it is spring. Plum starts to blossom and the buds of cherry trees swell up little by little.

Haru-shigure (“spring shower” in English) refers to spring rain that falls during fine days. The wind is cold, yet there is no snow. Enjoy your favorite drink in this refreshingly colored sake cup while thinking about the upcoming spring.

Tsugaru Vidro NEBUTA, Nebuta Small Shallow Pot

【Tsugaru Vidro】A group of craftsmen who have been making glass spheres for fishing equipment for around 70 years in the city of Aomori, Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main island, carefully hand-craft Tsugaru Vidro items one by one. They are craft items that are robust and abundantly use the plentiful natural colors of Aomori.

A time of beginningsRisshun, Hatsuuma, Kotohajime

"Nijushi Sekki", or solar terms, is used to express the division of the year into 24 seasons. The first of these, around February 4th, is called "Risshun". It is a time when there may be flickers of snow, yet spring is approaching for sure.

A day called "Hatsuuma" is also in February. On this day, festivals are held at Inari shrines all through the country. Inari shrines are marked by "kitsune" (fox), which are enshrined there and regarded as a messenger of the god. The “Hatsuuma Taisai” held at Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is a festival that is said to have a history of more than 1300 years. It is used to pray for safety of the home and business prosperity for that year, and is crowded with many people.

February 8th is called "Kotohajime" and is a day said to be suitable to start farm work. It is also know as "Hari-Kuyo" day, a festival where needles that have been used are made new again. This time of year, after the events of New Year have settled down, is perfect for starting new things. Won’t you take up something new?

February FoodChocolates

When it comes to food in February in Japan, it can only be chocolates. The custom of Valentine's Day on February 14th, which is known as a day for lovers in Europe, came to Japan and became established as a day when women give chocolates to men.

Places that sell chocolates become very crowded this time of year. There are many chocolates that are limited, so there is currently an increase in the number of people buying chocolates just for themselves or for friends.

February CraftsCat Items

Cats have been living among and loved by people since ancient times. The "Maneki Neko" in particular is an ornament that has become widely popular among people as an auspicious item that brings money and customers.

In the 2000s, Japan experienced an unprecedented cat boom! Cats go at their own pace and are mysterious, yet at the same time they show innocent glee when you play with them and frolic playfully – this contrast gives them irresistible loveliness.

When said in Japanese, the date 22 February sounds like a cat’s meow and so this day has become Cat Day. Both those who have cats and those who don’t are sure to be soothed by these cute cat items!
